Step by step: making an Espresso Martini at home

Espresso Martini

A coffee cocktail is a great way to bring two beloved flavours together: coffee and alcohol. One of the most popular is the Espresso Martini, a drink that's perfect for a night out or a cosy get-together at home. In this blog you'll learn step by step how to make this classic yourself.

What is a coffee cocktail?

This drink, often called an Espresso Martini, mixes the strong flavour of coffee with an alcoholic twist. Although the name "Martini" brings gin to mind, we want to keep gin as far away from this as possible. Instead, it's made with vodka and coffee liqueur.

What do you need for this espresso martini recipe?

  • Espresso: Half&half from Solberg&Hansen – 30 ml
  • Vodka: Use a good vodka for the best results. 30ml
  • Coffee liqueur: A popular choice is Kahlúa – 20 ml
  • Coffee beans
  • Optional: sugar syrup – 5 ml

Making a coffee cocktail: step by step

  1. Brew the coffee: Start by pulling a strong espresso. Let it cool for a moment before you carry on.
  2. Shake it all up: Put the cooled coffee, vodka, coffee liqueur and a little sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker. Top up with ice cubes and shake hard for about 20 seconds. This gives you a lovely layer of foam.
  3. Pour and serve: Strain the contents of the shaker into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with three coffee beans for a nice finish.

Tips for the liqueur

1. Kahlúa: This is probably the best-known coffee liqueur of all. Kahlúa originally comes from Mexico and has a rich, sweet coffee flavour with hints of vanilla.

2. Tia Maria: Comes from Jamaica. A slightly lighter flavour than Kahlúa, with more emphasis on the coffee and a touch of vanilla and caramel.

3. Mr Black: A craft coffee liqueur from Australia, known for its strong, pure coffee flavour. Less sugar than other liqueurs.

Variations on the original recipe

  • Stronger coffee version: Add an extra shot of espresso for a more intense flavour.
  • Vanilla twist: Use vanilla vodka or add a drop of vanilla extract.
  • Chocolate version: A splash of chocolate liqueur makes the drink even richer.

With these coffee liqueurs you can take your Espresso Martini or any other coffee cocktail to the next level and tune it to your own taste! So grab your shaker and get started!
